Although the first polka was recorded in 1936 by James Morrison and Tom Carmody, both it and the second polka will always be associated in my mind with the playing of the legendary Tyrone accordion player Kevin McGillian(1927-2018), whose unique and inimitable style of dance music
will never be forgotten. He played these two and a third polka, and having no names for them, he always referred to them as Polkas A, B, and C. I play A and B here. Having played for ceilis and set dances throughout the Philadelphia area from his arrival in 1955 until his untimely passing last year, he influenced all knew him. This track is dedicated to Kevin, his wife Mary, and his sons John and Jimmy, who are keeping their father’s sets of tunes alive via their marvelous music on accordion and banjo. Kevin was inducted in 2001 in the Comhaltas Hall of Fame along with New York fiddle maestro Andy McGann. The third tune was learned from the piping of Tiarnan O’Duinnchinn, and is a composition of Cork accordion player Dave Hennessy.
